Environment agency permit granted

We are pleased to announce that the Environment Agency, a non-departmental public body sponsored by the UK government’s Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has granted Waste Knot Energy’s pellet manufacturing facility in Middlesbrough a Bespoke Installation Permit.

Awarded in August 2021 under The Environmental Permitting Regulations 2018, this gives us full authority to produce pelletised fuel from selected solid refuse fuel (SRF) materials derived from non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste such as cardboard, wood and non-chlorinated plastics.

The plant, located on Dawson’s Wharf Industrial Estate on the River Tees, Teesside, will manually and mechanically shred, separate, sort and screen this waste into different components for recovery, including organic and inorganic substances.

It will then dry and process this material into our Solid Improved Recovered Fuel (SIRF) pellets at a rate of 45 tonnes of SRF per hour. These will be used in the European cement industry as a direct low carbon replacement for coal and pet coke in the cement manufacturing process.

The Middlesbrough plant will contain three processing lines, each comprising screening and separation equipment in addition to two low temperature belt driers (powered by two gas burners), hammer mills and pellet mills.

The permit allows us to store waste on site prior to treatment and store pellets prior to transportation to customers.

We have been working closely with Sol Environment, an independent environmental consultancy, to manage the application and receive our permit in just eight months. We are delighted with this result and are looking forward to commencing production as soon as the plant is operational.
